In the wake of the  protests over police violence that engulf hundreds of cities across the United States,China has seized upon the ongoing unrest  by alluding to the American hypocrisy and decline. Chinese state media and government officials are openly mocking US politicians for calling for the protection of democratic and human rights across the globe, like in Hong Kong, while simultaneously standing behind their own government, which brutally suppresses the concerns and calls for justice .

International human rights NGOs and activists have Unified togather to call for an end to brutality and systemic oppression and racism against Black Americans in the US in the wake of  the tragic, violent death of an African American man George Floyd who was killed at the hands of four white police officers  in Minneapolis. Amnesty International (AI) and Human Rights Watch (HRW) have also published  neatly reports on President Donald Trump’s administration and the mass arrests of protestors.

Rachel Ward, National Director of Research at Amnesty International USA, said, “Racism and white supremacy are fuelling these killings and the police response to the protests.”

“President Trump must end his violent and discriminatory rhetoric and policies, and the US government – at all levels – must ensure the right to protest as guaranteed by international law,” she continued.

Black Americans are subjected to racial discrimination, they form a disproportionate proportion of the prison population, and they are more likely to imprison  or pass longer sentences  for the same crimes as their white counterparts.

Their anger and despair are the result of centuries of oppression and targeted racism that left them physically and psychologically vulnerable. These feelings of mistrust and disappointment in the regime generated chaos during the ongoing protests, which witnessed multiple incidents of riots and looting.

After China’s announcement of its proposed new security law in Hong Kong two weeks ago, State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus tweeted, “This is a pivotal moment for the world. It will go down in history. Freedom loving people around the world must stand with the rule of law and hold to account the Chinese Communist Party, which has flagrantly broken its promises to the people of Hong Kong.”

Overall, this only illustrates the selective opportunism and insincerity that the actions of these senators embody, hiding behind an ideology they claim to be a pursuit of justice. Hong Kong is only a means to an end.
