Pilot Joseph Tar Schmidt of United Express posted a video shortly after midnight Thursday in which the pilot played Christmas music on the violin before his flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Kansas City, Missouri., In which he showed a "happy birthday" performance for his passengers .
"It was truly an honor to play for our lovely customers this Christmas. Bringing holiday cheer one carol at a time!" Schmidt wrote.
"It was something I’ve wanted to do for a few years but never got around to it for one reason or another," Schmidt told USA TODAY. "The setting was right (on) Christmas Day, as I knew we had great weather and weren’t expecting any delays. I am extremely lucky to have the ability to share my two passions with others around me — flying, and playing my violin."
Twitter users have replied, praising Schmidt. "That’s so wonderful!" @Jen_Niffer wrote. "How cool!" @BalchJamesBalch wrote.
United spokesperson Leigh Schramm told USA TODAY: "We know that holiday travel can be stressful and it’s great to see our employees striving to make the customer experience as enjoyable as possible."
