Morocco’s Dakhla Wins Euro-Mediterranean City of Sport Award

Morocco’s Dakhla won, on Tuesday, december 10 evening in Brussels, the Euro-Mediterranean Sports City 2020 award, during a ceremony organized by the European Parliament.The award comes in recognition of Morocco’s for the development of the southern provinces, particularly through the promotion of sports.

It is also the result of the efforts made by local authorities, sports associations and clubs to make Dakhla a sporting destination of choice, in terms of organizing large-scale events throughout the year, developing infrastructure and implementing policies and programs aimed at promoting sports.

Dakhla is considered  the first city in south Morocco to receive the Euro-Mediterranean City of Sport award, says ACES Europe.

The award ceremony was held in the presence of European personalities, in particular, the European Commissioner for Innovation and Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mrs. Maria Gabriel, a number of European representatives, the President of the European Capitals and Sports Cities Association (ACES Europe), Gian Francesco Lobatelli, and the mayor of Ad Dakhla, Sidi Salouh al-Jummani.

The Euro-Mediterranean Sports City Award is awarded every year to the city that actively contributes to the advancement of sports, and which makes sports practice a lever for the integration of all segments of society. For the 2020 version, Dakhla was the only city from the southern shore of the Mediterranean basin that had submitted its candidacy in order to win this benefit.

Dakhla was described as the pearl of southern Morocco, as the pearl of southern Morocco, where the city is a gateway to Africa.
