American Airlines is adding a new feature  passport chip scanning by mobile app, which eliminates the need for an agent to examine the passport and saving passengers and employees time, This allows customers to head directly to the gate for international flights without having their passports rechecked .

The company said it is the first airline to use NFC (near field communication ) technology to transfer passport information securely. It's the same technology behind non-cash payment systems like Apple Pay. Initially, it will only be available for trips with one person in custody. It will eventually be expanded to include bookings with many travelers, including families.

Currently, customers who check into an international flight on the American app will be required to enter some basic passport information and then use their smartphone or other iOS or Android mobile device to scan the chip on the back page of the passport.

Kevin MacFarland, Managing Director of American Digital Customer Experience, said the new feature would be especially helpful in cases where passports were not checked at the local terminal for an international flight with a connection, Albuquerque says to Santiago, Chile, via Dallas Fort Worth.
